themes and outcomes of the day

The discussion generated several topics which were grouped into the following six themes for discussion:
1. Play and locative media – principles for designing tools for open/creative play (language?) - mobile capture/editing/playback tools?
2. Future technology in the playground/natural environment
3. Educational use - hidden & explicit learning, spatial learning
4. Social use - designing technology for shared use, social games
5. Audience – when is it not play? (council, planners) who defines the audience, public voice, “green mapping”
6. adult control v children’s empowerment - surveillance, content, children as co-designers - practical and ethical considerations
Each was allocated to a discussion table, and after an hour or so the groups gave feed back on how well htey had stuck to the topic! click on the above to see the notes from each session, and to add your comments. As there were not enough participants for nos. 1 & 5 these were cut from the session but are now online for discussion.
Other suggested outcomes from the day were

a mailing list for seminar participants, and to create a mailing list that other people could also subscribe to which would keep email private
a list for participants projects and contact details
a list of other relevant projects and research, for a reference/resource
matching/broker for people who are looking for project partners
apply for funding eg for a network

Purpose of the day: To bring together those working or interested in projects working with children and locative media, to share experiences and discuss future directions & issues. This seminar will include presentations on existing projects (A New Sense of Place? & Mudlarking) as well as opportunities for discussion and networking
